Smart grids

Without “smart” grids, efficient use of renewable energy is not possible. The reason is simple: sun, wind and water are not
always or only to a limited extent available, while energy suppliers require constant and reliable electricity generation.

The close interaction between clients, providers and producers is therefore a prerequisite for the development of “smart” networks and the use of price advantages. The government in Italy has created the conditions for this. Households and businesses in South Tyrol now have smart meters. An innovative project, sponsored by the local administration in South
Tyrol and observed across Europe, has gone further and tested an experimental business energy management system as well as the use of forecasting models based on artificial intelligence in order to improve the utilisation of local power networks. With its motto “co-operation instead of confrontation”, the South Tyrol Energy Association is implementing this smart grid initiative with its project partners Syneco GmbH and Etschwerke Netz AG.
